House of Tricks: The first trip takes us to the elegant gardens of the award winning American cuisine, House of Tricks. Depart for a one of a kind, getaway lunch and enjoy Arizona’s fine dining on Mill Avenue in the heart of Tempe.

The relaxing environment, hidden between trees and two bungalows, this eatery holds a favorite spot for locals to eat contemporary foods in a exquisite kind of way. The sunny outside patio was where I was seated and a well dressed waiter greeted himself as Ben. He then placed a hard covered menu in front of me, and filled my glass with ice cold lemon water. The first thing I wanted to know was the chef’s favorite lunch dish, and Ben replied ” The House of Tricks is considered a “New American” dining with a menu of french, greek and southwestern foods. As for the chef seasonal menu he caters to the communities taste with a specialty in sandwiches, gourmet salads, seafood, meats, and a variety of specialty side starters. There are so many amazing foods, for me to tell you the houses favorite that would be impossible.” So studying the menu I narrowed my choices, starting with an appetizer of : Mediterranean Tapas Platter with Cucumber, Hummus, Tabouleh, Feta Cheese, Marinated Olives, Tomato-Basil Salad, Dolmades and Grilled Flatbread (bottom picture of dish) priced at $5. That was a perfect way to start, the original garlic hummus was served with a soft pita flatbread. Each bite was mouth watering as the green olives and lemon leaf rice was on the side of the platter for taste too. Next was the main course in the sandwich category: Muffaletta Sandwich with Toscana Salami, Pepperoni, Copa Hot Ham, Mortadella, Ementhaler and Olives on Asiago Focaccia with a substitute of fresh fruit priced at $10. Even though this dish was more expensive it was well deserving. The affordable dish was presented with a rich style and the sandwich was delighting. The meats were warm and the bread was soft and rich. I was in heaven! Seasoned and drizzled with a Balsamic Vinaigrette which made the sandwich hold a perfect moist. Provolene Cheese was melting on the different meats perfectly and the olives were a great add. The food was delicious and made with a touch of trick.

My experience with the food was great, but there is something I must mention. In my opinion Ben, our waiter,  wasn’t fulfilling “gracious service.” There were many times I would repeat for more water, and he wouldn’t come to my table as frequent like one waiter should. I know that Saturday around noon is a busy time, but I think for the elegance of this restaurant the waiter should of been more on his toes willing to add immediate service to every table at House of Tricks. Overall I can’t complain with what dishes were placed in front of me, but as for Ben, I am complaining on how I was waited on. In comparison to chain restaurants, House of Tricks holds its own against American food eateries such as Applebees, Chilis, and Ruby Tuesdays. This Contemporary American food is well prepared and healthier. Leaving the oasis with satisfying taste buds, I am able to say that my trip to House of Tricks was a good start to my journey as a foodie.
